A year ago, Nicaragua has opened its first commercial wind farm Amayo in Rivas, Nicaragua to the south, with a capacity of 40 megawatts of electric energy. You currently supplies 5% of the energy needed by Nicaragua. At full load it will produce 7-9%. The second phase of the Amoyo wind farms should be completed by mid-2010 with additional 11 wind turbines generating 2.1 megawatts each, so that then a total of 23 turbines will be available.

Three other wind energy projects are in various stages of planning and development. The nicaraguense-Venezuelan joint-venture company ALBA NISA has received a license to determine the wind potential of a further wind farm in Rivas with 40 windmills, each of which will generate 2 megawatts Elektizität. 300 megawatts of Nicaragua's domestic electricity needs are already provided (by serious energy shortages during the two years before Ortega's government came to power), is likely to increase electricity generation wait until the completion of his SIEPAC, a project to link the countries from Panama to Guatemala with transmission lines to a regional transmission network.
